Zoe

"Spill!" Tina demands, cornering me by the napkin dispenser. "When did this happen?" She points emphatically to the sparkly diamond band on my left hand.

Sarah leans in, eyes narrowed. "And how come we didn't know anything about it, you little sneak?"

I plaster on a smile, ignoring my racing pulse. I should have known this was gonna happen. I completely spaced that I was wearing a wedding ring, but of course it’s the first thing my coworkers noticed. "Okay, okay. But you have to promise not to freak out."

Tina puts up fingers in what I think is a Girl Scout pledge sign and Sarah mimes zipping her lips.

I take a deep breath and spill it all out in a frenzied rush. "IgotmarriedtoGrumpalicious."

Tina's and Sarah's mouths form perfect O's of shock before they explode.

"What?!"

"No way!"

"When did you start dating Grumpalicious?" Tina whisper-shouts.

"Dish, girl!" Sarah prods my arm. "How long has this been going on?"

I hold up my hands in surrender. "I know it seems totally out of the blue."

"Uh, yeah!" Sarah nods vigorously. "Last we knew, Mr. Scowling Hottie could barely grunt two syllables at you."

"Right." I bite my lip. "But, um, we just had this connection, you know?"

I feel my cheeks flame. It’s not a lie. Maxwell and I connected in a very specific way—through an online arranged marriage site.

"His name is Maxwell," I mumble. "Maxwel Zeller."

"Maxwell, huh?" Sarah says thoughtfully. Then her eyes grow wide. "Wait. Maxwell Zeller?"

"Shut up!" Tina gasps dramatically. "As in, the CEO of MZ Media? That Maxwell Zeller?"

Again, I nod.

Sarah lets out a low whistle. "Whoa. You landed yourself a big fish, honey. A whopper!"

Tina folds her arms triumphantly. "I knew that man had it bad for you."

I feel my cheeks grow even warmer. If only they knew the full story.

Tina smacks my arm playfully. "You sly dog you. Here we thought you were still mooning over Brad, and you had this sexy billionaire in your back pocket."

I grin self-consciously. "It just sort of happened."

"Mm-hmm." Sarah crosses her arms over her busty chest. "So where'd you go on your honeymoon then?" She nudges me and waggles her brows. "Please say Fiji. Or Bora Bora. No, the Maldives!"

"We, uh..."

Before I can think of an answer, Brad emerges from just behind the kitchen door. He was probably eavesdropping again.

"Well, well, well," he says loudly. "Look who's back from her little vacay."

I stiffen when his lip curls derisively, his gaze drops to my left hand and he spits out, "Didn't take you long to move on, did it?"

He’s being a dick. He’s the one who dumped me. But I will not take his bait. I snap my mouth shut, pressing my lips into a tight line.

His nasty smirk eats at me. Oh, hell, I can’t help myself. My temper flares.

"I could say the same about you," I fire back coolly. "How is...oh, what was her name again? Starshine? No, wait—Starla." I tap my chin mock-thoughtfully.

Brad's face reddens. Behind him, I see Sarah struggling to hold back laughter.
